How to handle identification?
After exploring how identification functions and what kind of consequences it can create, it would be easy to conclude that we should avoid it.
But is this really possible?
The intellectual mind functions through identifications and without the intellect how are we going to survive in this world? It seems that we can't fully avoid identification, but we can definitely keep it to a minimum. The compulsiveness of the mind is what mostly creates unnecessary identifications.
Then there is the unconscious part of mind identification we have to consider. When you are aware that the mind has created an identity and that it thinks through this identity, but that this is not you and that it will influence how reality is perceived, will you have the same kind of consequences compared to when you are fully unconscious of this process? This seems to be the real deal-breaker.
When you become spiritual and make efforts to move beyond identification, the trap for many seekers is that the mind also creates identity out of this. This can easily stand in the way of spiritual progress.
Freedom lies in knowing that the mind keeps creating identities and not taking it seriously. This seems to be the only way to move beyond identity.
